Here be gold by prperold Here be gold by prperold
Millwood, close to Knysna, South Africa

In the 1800's a lot of gold mining took place in this location.

This is a manual blend of 3 shots. A slight Orton effect was also implemented in order to get that "mystical" look.

*re-post

I gave this shot a re-edit after recently discovering Tony Kuyper's tutorials on luminosity masks. I'm never going back :)

I've just recently started implementing the theory in those tutorials myself too... awesome and quick way and saves me soo long on painting into masks, I love them! did you "donate" and get them sent to you?

I figured I could replicate the actions from the tuts, but there are still some actions that he doesn't explain, so I "donated" :) The blending is really cool, but I'm still struggling a bit with exactly how to make which adjustments with which luminosity masks. Guess I'll just have to fool around with it A LOT :)

haha yeah I think it's one of those things which benefits from a little playing around :)

I figured the same, and have just been creating the selections myself so far... but it's these midtones masks which I'm really keen to get started with and really not sure I can be arsed creating all those actions! pretty broke right now, did you get away with a teeny tiny donation? haha.. that would be nice!

Yeah the midtone mask is really great. Unfortunately no teeny donation, just the standard $25 :(

bummer.. don't know why they even pretend it's a donation of your choice then! sounds like it's worth it though... sold some shots for a real estate marketing campaign today so when the $ comes in I think 25 will go that way ;)

Aye, known about his method for a while but havent used it at all. Still do by hand. One day i'll put the time in to it. Though not a fan at all of the results here. Way too much gray and weird shadow recovery.

Great light, wonderful shot. How do you do your blending? I like the results :)

Thanks. Regarding the blending, I always begin by putting the darker layer on top. Instead of using a brush on the mask, I begin by using "Apply Image" where the background layer is applied. It works great for difficult blends. It does however sometimes generate weird results, but then from there on I use the brush to refine it. For trees and things like that it works like a charm.
